Castle Point Borough Council is inviting residents to have their say on whether street lights across the Borough should remain on throughout the night—between the hours of 1am and 5am.

The consultation comes in light of long-standing policy by Essex County Council (ECC), which is responsible for most street lighting in the area. In 2014, ECC implemented part-night lighting across the county, initially switching off lights from midnight to 5am, later revised to 1am to 5am, to reduce energy use and costs.

Now, Castle Point Borough Council is considering funding the reinstatement of full overnight lighting during those hours, and wants to know if there is public support for the idea.

Councillor Stephen Mountford, Cabinet Member for Resources said: “From shift workers to early risers, overnight street affects residents — and we believe that residents should be the ones to shape this policy. I strongly encourage everyone across Castle Point to take part in this consultation and have their voices heard.”

Community feedback will guide the Council’s final decision on whether to pursue an agreement with ECC—and take on the funding required to restore overnight street lighting across the Borough.

The consultation will run from today (7 July) to 1 August 2025. Residents can share their views online via the Council website.

Paper copies will be available the Council’s offices at Kiln Road and Waterside Leisure Centre.
