Essential maintenance is planned on Canvey Way, Canvey Island to replace the original mechanical expansion/movement joint on East Haven Viaduct.
This joint was originally installed in 1973 when the structure was first built and now needs to be replaced as it has exceeded its service life and is beyond economical repair. The installation is a significant piece of work as the joint spans the width of the carriageway.
Work will be phased, as indicated below, to reduce local inconvenience. Where possible we will also plan other works to fully utilise the closure on Canvey Way.
Phases 1: Overnight temporary traffic lights 23 to 26 October on Canvey Way
Phase 2: Weekend closure* of Canvey Way commencing 9pm Friday 27 October until Monday 30 October at 5am when it reopens
Phase 3: Overnight closure* of Canvey Way on Sunday 5 November.
*No vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists will be permitted to pass over the Viaduct during road closures on Canvey Way. Please note that the diversion route on Ferry Road includes a low signed bridge of 16’-0”.
