Covid-19 Memorial for Canvey Island

Canvey Island Town Council agreed at its Full Council meeting on the 22nd February 2021 that it wishes to install a memorial within the Labworth Memorial Gardens to commemorate those that have lost their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The gardens have for many years commemorated the loss of life during the 1953 floods and more recently since the Town Council took ownership, benches and plaques have been installed for any resident who wishes to remember a loved one.  The Town Council feel that this area would be a fitting location to commemorate the tragedy of COVID-19.

Canvey Island has lost many residents during the pandemic, young and old and although costs have not yet been agreed, the Council will be conducting investigations to create a commemorative garden which will be a tribute to all those that have lost their lives during these unprecedented times.

Cllr Alan Acott, Town Mayor of Canvey Island Town Council said: “The Town Council wish to remember and commemorate the tragedy of the pandemic in 2020/21 and wish to create a beautiful area that family members can visit and remember those that they have lost during these sad times.”  Ends
