Castle Point Borough Council in partnership with Canvey Island Town Council held a dog fouling educational campaign on Thursday, 16th February on Canvey Island.

There was an information point at the Knightswick Shopping Centre in the town centre during the morning where residents could talk with Jess Fisher, the Town Council’s Community Warden and Stuart Jarvis, Castle Point Council’s Contracts Manager and report any areas in the borough which are ‘hot spots’ for dog fouling.

Information was available connected with the law, the effects of dog fouling and different methods that can be used to clean up after owners’ dogs.  The two Councils then did a joint patrol on Canvey sea front in the afternoon.

Cllr Joan Liddiard, Chairman of Canvey Island Town Council commented: “There are many residents who are concerned about dog fouling on the island.  We want to promote responsible dog ownership and spread the message that it is not acceptable for dog owners to ignore their dogs mess.  By working in partnership with Castle Point Borough Council, we can combine resources with a united approach to combating this issue.”

Councillor Riley, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Scene at Castle Point Borough Council added: “We should thank the vast majority of dog walkers who now remove their animal’s poo and challenge the few who refuse to understand the health hazards of not disposing of it. It is so simple to do as suitably wrapped dog poo can be disposed of in any litter bin, not just dog bins.”

Further joint patrols and educational information sessions will be held on a regular basis in future months ahead.
