Following the notice of confirmed designation placed on Canvey Lake on the 24th September 2016 and issued by the Fish Health Inspector of the Centre for Environment Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) acting as the competent authority for the purposes of the Aquatic Animal Health (England and Wales) Regulations 2009, the Town Council can now confirm that examinations of samples taken by CEFAS from the dead common carp found no evidence for the presence of koi herpesvirus (KHV) disease and that their diagnostic testing for these samples is now complete.
It is still unclear as to the cause of the recent fish deaths, predominantly carp, and for this reason Canvey Lake is closed to angling currently whilst the situation is being assessed.
The Town Council’s Community Warden continues to attend the site daily, walking banks and observing the fish stock where possible.
A Town Council spokesperson commented: "The health of the fish is paramount. We will not open the site to angling until we are content that the stock has returned to full health. We are grateful to the angling community for their understanding and we look forward to opening as soon as we can."
