A group of residents who opened their gardens recently on Canvey Island raised hundreds of pounds to help the charity, Cancer Research UK. The total amount that was raised during the Garden Trail held on 23rd July was £464.51 and came from sales of preserves and plants as well as programmes at each garden location and refreshments supplied by St Nicholas Church.
On Friday, those who took part (pictured) met to receive a certificate of appreciation for their contribution to the fundraising event. Cllr Doreen Anderson, who organised the event, commented: “My thanks to everyone who took part in the first Canvey Island Garden Trail. Without you, the garden owners – it would not have been possible. I hope everyone will take part again next year. Your enthusiasm has inspired many people to
visit Canvey Island from as far away as Chelmsford and Wickford.”
Caroline Alabi, the South Essex Area Volunteer Manager for Cancer Research UK who accepted the cheque and presented the Canvey
Island Town Council with a certificate said: “I am honoured to accept a cheque from Canvey Island Town Council for this fantastic sum raised through the open garden event. I was inspired by not only Cllr Anderson’s outstanding garden but the number of other residents who took
part to raise money for Cancer Research UK. Being the first ever open garden event held, the amount raised is a testament that the local residents are not only charitable but also amazing gardeners.”
Cancer Research UK is the charity chosen by Canvey Island Town Council for this year as this disease affects many families within the community.
